KRT rider Rea, 30 and from Northern Ireland, made history during the 2017 World Superbike season by clinching his third consecutive WSBK title with Kawasaki and the Ninja ZX-10RR and setting a new record for the most points scored in a season with 556.
Following the conclusion of a phenomenally successful 2017 season for Rea and Kawasaki, a petition was started calling for him to be nominated for the prestigious award. The petition reached 10,000 signatures earlier this month and Kawasaki is proud that Jonathan Rea is included in the SPOTY shortlist, which was announced by the BBC this week.
Rea’s achievements with the Kawasaki Racing Team and the Ninja ZX-10RR have already been recognised by the British Crown; Rea was given an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in June, which he collected during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace last week.
BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2017 takes place the Echo Arena in Liverpool in December 17. During the show, which will be broadcast live in BBC One, the he public can vote for the winner online by going to the Sports Personality website or calling the number for Jonathan Rea on screen during the programme.
